"Orange is the New Black" star Diane Guerrero, who plays Maritza Ramos in the show, did not think that she would have her own book by the age of 29, but America's failed immigration reform pushed her to open up about the woes faced by undocumented immigrants.

Guerroro co-wrote the book entitled "In the Country We Love: The True Story of a Family Divided" with Michelle Burford, and the two ladies detailed the failed efforts of her parents to obtain legal status in the U.S.

Because of her parents' multiple deportations, Guerrero suffered from fear and depression. She also had difficulty maintaining a relationship with her parents because of their constant separation.

Guerrero hopes that people who read her book will be made aware of how immigration affects the lives of families, and maybe even inspire them to get involved in the political process.

"If I have this platform and I'm not using it for good, then what am I doing?" Guerrero told HuffPost. "I felt like I needed to share my story in order to sort of bring awareness to the issue because I had personally experienced this. I just couldn't see another person on CNN talk about this issue who actually hasn't experienced it or doesn't know anybody who has gone through it. I wanted to be involved."

Meanwhile, author Piper Kerman, whose memoir was used to create Jenji Kohan's Netflix show, also used her book to open people's mindsets about the prison system in America.

"It's always fascinating to see characters, situations, conflicts that are in fact drawn from the book that have been taken, changed and adapted in very, very creative ways," she told the Calgary Herald about the show. "But the things that are important to me, most important to me, are that the themes from the book around race and class and gender and power and friendship and empathy, those themes are front and centre in every single episode of the show."

"Orange is the New Black" season 4 will return to Netflix on Friday, June 17.
