New spoilers for "Penny Dreadful" season three hinted that there is going to be a love triangle between Vanessa Ives, the werewolf Ethan Chandler and the zoologist Dr. Alexander Sweet.
At the end of "Penny Dreadful" season two, Vanessa admitted her love for Ethan but he rejected her and turned himself in to the inspector that was looking for the murderer who was behind the Mariner's Inn massacre.
In the "Penny Dreadful" season three premiere, Vanessa met a kind zoologist named Dr. Alexander Sweet and the two flirted a bit while they examined the remains of preserved scorpions.
Entertainment Weekly reported that "Penny Dreadful" executive producer John Logan confirmed that there is going to be a love triangle between Vanessa, Dr. Sweet and Ethan in the third season.
"Vanessa begins a romantic relationship with Dr. Sweet," he said. "She attempts to heal her heart and her mind simultaneously. She's taking real steps to make herself better. However, even though Vanessa is genuinely falling in love with Dr. Sweet, the pull towards Ethan is so strong. It's a challenging situation for her."
Logan also revealed that viewers will finally learn how Ethan became a werewolf and hinted that Josh Hartnett's character will be forced to reckon with his past.
"It's a real reckoning for Ethan this season," he explained. "I always planned to have the character go back and grapple with his past in season three. He'll have to face his demons, which include his tense relationship with his father and how he became a werewolf. I think it was great for Josh to have the opportunity to explore Ethan's backstory."
Aside from Logan's new interview, Showtime released the official synopsis for the second episode of season three.
SpoilerTV noted that the synopsis for "Predators Far And Near" hinted that Ethan is going to get some help from Hecate Poole, the daughter of Vanessa's nemesis Evelyn Poole.
Given the fact that his father's men kidnapped him in the season three premiere, it is possible the witch will try to free Ethan in the hopes of convincing him to work for the fallen angel Lucifer.
Back in Britain, Vanessa's relationship with Dr. Sweet continues to blossom, although she is blissfully unaware that dark forces are watching her every move.
Lily Frankenstein and Dorian Gray are also going to save a young woman while Victor Frankenstein works with his friend Dr. Henry Jekyll to come up with a serum that would tame his monstrous creation.
"Penny Dreadful" season three is currently airing on Sunday nights at 10 p.m. on Showtime.
