Michelle Obama was present at last night's State of the Union Address looking flawless in wool-crepe Narciso Rodriguez. It was simply cut, from an American designer, and complemented her in the best possible way—so why was the internet making such a big fuss over it?
Between all the effusive characters of praise, Twitter spent a lot of time trying to figure out what color to call it, alternating between orange and yellow mostly. Emerging from the argumentative sea was fashion writer Robin Givhan, who had clearly received the press release from the label and shared the official ID: marigold.
The debate wasn't for everybody: When The New York Times political account tweeted a mention of it, things got testy.
And while we love a good color debate (remember that internet-destroying debate a year ago?), Twitter pointed out another possible reason behind the FLOTUS' fashion choice.
This summer saw the first National Gun Violence Awareness Day, an occasion marked with a social campaign encouraging people to wear orange (#WearingOrange). The color choice was reportedly inspired by hunters who wear the bright color to announce their presence when in the woods. "Orange was chosen to symbolize the value of human life and is worn as a signal that wearers do not want to be the next victim of gun violence," Nza-Ari Khepra, founding member of Project Orange Tree, a group created after the 2013 Chicago killing of Hadiya Pendleton, told CNN.
Whatever the color, whatever her reason for wearing it, we have sad news: the dress is sold out. The calf-length style had been on sale, but is a no-go now. Here's a full-length look at it:
