FX announced that the dark clown comedy, "Baskets," starring Zach Galifianakis will be returning for a second season.
According to a network release, the series co-created by Galifianakis, Louis C.K. and Jonathan Krisel "delivered the most-watched basic cable primetime comedy series premiere since 2014."
"Baskets" follows Chip Baskets, played by Galifianakis, who is a classically trained French clown in Paris. Unfortunately, Chip fails miserably in Paris and is forced to return home to Bakersfield, Calif.
Chip has to settle for being a rodeo clown while also trying to deal with his past and all of the things he left there.
From the start, "Baskets" has received high praise. Especially for the casting of Louie Anderson as Chip and Dale's (also played by Galifianakis) Mother, Christine.
Variety wrote in a review of the series, "It's almost worth watching 'Baskets' just to see Anderson play one of the most instantly amusing and sympathetic characters on TV."
The article went on to say:
"This is a show that works best in its small moments and asides; a scene of Christine showing a family photo album to Martha is wonderfully digressive and full of deadpan wit, as are the low-budget commercials Dale makes for his network of training colleges."
Fans of C.K.'s FX show, "Louie," are already accustomed to his style of dark comedy. In "Louie," the draw comes from the ability to be intensely dark and intensely comedic at the same time. Unsurprisingly, that same quality is also inherent of "Baskets."
"This is a comedy starring Zach Galifianakis about a clown and it is devastating," writes The Daily Beast.
No release date has been set, but we can expect to see more of Chip and his mother sometime in early 2017.
