Celebrity Stylists on the Problem With Worst-Dressed Red-Carpet Lists

There's no denying that for every breathtaking red-carpet moment, there's going to be another that feels a bit more...questionable. Taste is a subjective, personal thing, yet year after year, award show after award show, worst-dressed lists are written up and hashed out, and, well, maybe the internet ought to stop.

"I hate them because it's so mean," celebrity stylist (and ace packer) Cher Coulter told The Telegraph. "Things that should stay in people's heads are there in black and white for the whole world to see online. The world we live in now is so judgmental and so passive, [with] everyone behind a screen like, 'Look at them! Look at them!' It's just ugly I think. Celebrities have feelings too."

The web has turned everyone into a critic about everything: food, movies, you name it. Fashion's not exempt, and those who are truly experts in the field say that they spend time reminding clients that certain opinions aren't well informed enough to matter.

"You have to really look at who is judging them. They might not be fashion people or people who understand fashion," Coulter said. Stylist Manny compared some worst-dressed offenders to art: Pricey and terribly confusing to outsiders, yet appreciated by those in the know. "It's easy to mock things that audiences don't fully understand, in the same way people may not see why a certain piece of art is so expensive and sought after if you are not from that world."

For the most part, landing on a list isn't detrimental to an actor's career (and to a degree, all publicity is good publicity). Coulter said that serial offenders likely don't care about the diss, and high-wattage stars who make a rare misstep won't see their fashion icon status shaken. Rather, it's the C-list types who might be missing out on an opportunity to make a splash by sticking to safe choices—far and away, fashion lovers and professionals agree that the biggest problem with worst-dressed lists is that they keep people from experimenting.

"If you're aiming for mass market you're not going to be on the worst dressed list, and you're not going to be on any list. You're going to be on the safe list."
