"Girls" star and creator Lena Dunham is furious over how singer and songwriter Kesha is being portrayed by the media. The activist has taken to her blog and penned an emotional tribute saying the singer is being "manipulated."
Said the "Girls" star in an essay on her blog "Lenny," "When I saw the outcome of Kesha's court case last Friday, I felt sick. The photos of her beautiful face crumpled with tears, the legally necessary but sickening use of the word "alleged," over and over in reference to the assault she says she remembers so vividly."
Kesha has been involved in a court case where she has been attempting to get out of a contract with her former collaborator and producer, Lukasz Gottwald, known professionally as Dr. Luke.
The singer has been trying to rid herself from a ten-year-old contract to Gottwald's company Kemosabe.
This company, which is a subsidiary of Sony, controls both Kesha's recording and publishing contracts.
"While the allegations of sexual assault and emotional abuse cannot be proven definitively, I think Kesha's words speak for themselves: "I know I cannot work with Dr. Luke. I physically cannot. I don't feel safe in any way," penned Dunham of her observations of the case.
Dunham stood up for the singer, alongside other female celebrities such as Taylor Swift, Demi Lovato and Adele, by stating that she felt Kesha's emotions should be taken into consideration instead of the company's bottom line.
Said the vocal "Girls" star, "What's happening to Kesha highlights the way that the American legal system continues to hurt women by failing to protect them from the men they identify as their abusers."
"The lack of perspective on the part of Sony - the inability to look at the worth of a woman's platinum records versus the worth of her soul being intact - is horrifying," concluded Dunham of Kesha's accusations towards Dr. Luke.
The case between Dr. Luke and Kesha is still ongoing.
"Girls" airs Sundays at 10 p.m. EST on HBO.
