Oprah Winfrey is saying goodbye to Chicago, officially shuttering the city's Harpo studios and moving all of her production work to sunny California. Along with all the memories and equipment that the talk show host and crew have to box up, there's another very important room that needs to be dealt with: her closet. She invited The Coveteur to come and spend some time with her as she went through the assembled clothes and accessories, documenting the production so we could all take a peek (thanks, guys!). Every single part of it is lovely, but the first thought to hit us? Holy cow, that's a work closet? It has the set-up and finishing that we'd dream of having in our dream house, and compared to the stuffed, far-from-pretty wardrobe rooms of most TV sets, this is in a league of its own.
The pieces she went through are being marked for storage, OWN studios, a forthcoming eBay auction, or Hawaii (which we're guessing means her palatial estate in Maui). Don't make the mistake of thinking this closet clean-out means that she's done with fashion either; it's just that her needs have changed.
"I just don't need all this intense color, the embellishment, the heels anymore. When you're in front of TV cameras every day, you have to stand out, but I'm in a different place now, and those things no longer serve me," she said. "My clothes were for being seen . . . now [they] are just for me."
"I was holding on to clothes that were all about a dream I had for myself. I chose them for this idea I'd gotten into my head of how someone like me was supposed to live, but they had nothing to do with my actual life."
As with all their closet sojourns, The Coveteur also pries a few interesting style tidbits out of Winfrey. She loves Donna Karan, white button-downs layered under sweaters, and was not a fan of stilettos when the cameras stopped rolling. "I never walked out of the studio in my stilts. As soon as we finished taping a show, the crazy heels came off and the soft slippers slid on."
