5. Many Of The Film's Most Memorable Lines Were Improvised
When Ben Stiller said the line in character as Derek Zoolander, "But why male models?" in the cemetery scene, it was improvised. He had forgotten the line and just repeated the same line he had said earlier, creating a memorable and hilarious moment in the film. The producers loved it so much they kept the flub in, according to the website Trolino.
4. The Original Film Was Banned In Malaysia
"Zoolander" was banned from being screened in the country of Malaysia because the film's plot revolved around Derek Zoolander being brainwashed into assassinating the prime minister of the country. The Malaysian government took offense at the spoof and refused to screen it, according to a report by The Guardian.
3. Owen Wilson Was The Real Reason "Zoolander" Was Able To Be Made
Ben Stiller once revealed that he wanted Owen Wilson to be a part of the spoof from the time the script was being written. He revealed in an interview that he didn't think the movie would have ever been the same without Wilson's participation as male model Hansel.
2. The Film Made Concessions To Those Lost In The 9/11 Tragedy
In several key shots in "Zoolander," clear images of the Twin Towers were visible. The film's release came shortly after the tragedy of 9/11 that killed innocent workers as well as first responders. In respect for the tragedy, the Twin Towers were digitally removed from the final film, according to IMDB.
1. Stiller's Entire Family Made Cameo Appearances In The Film
Not only did Stiller's wife Christine Taylor star in the film, there were plenty of appearances for the entire Stiller family to participate in the on-camera fun. Father Jerry Stiller portrayed Maury Ballstein, mother Anne Meara played a protestor who egged Mugatu and Stiller's sister Amy was a member of Hansel's posse, according to Today.
