Good news "Blacklist" fans, a spinoff series starring Famke Janssen ("How to Get Away With Murder) is currently being produced by NBC.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the pilot is set to premiere on May 12, and is being directed by "Justified" alum Michael Dinner.
Janssen will play lead Susan "Scottie" Halstead. THR reported that Janssen's character will be introduced in the "Blackist" run in season 3, episode 21 (May 5). Most of the details surrounding the spinoff and Janssen's character are being kept close to the vest, but it is possible she will be introduced as Tom's (Ryan Eggold) mother.
Edi Gathegi will also be appearing as a series regular in the spinoff. Gathegi will continue to play his "Blacklist" character, Matias Solomon, who, fans will remember, is an operative after Red (James Spader).
"The Blacklist" spinoff will be produced by Sony Pictures Television and Davis Entertainment. "The Blacklist" creator Jon Bokenkamp will also be on board for the series spinoff. Joining him as exec producers are John Eisendrath ("Alias"), John Davis ("Predator") and John Fox and Michael Watkins ("The X-Files").
According to THR, even if the spinoff gets greenlit and moves forward it is unclear if it will come this broadcasting season.
"The Blacklist," which has already been renewed for a fourth season, is a major hit for NBC. It is the network's second drama — in viewership — right behind "Blindspot." Therefore, it is not surprising that NBC is looking to capitalize on the Spader flagship.
"NBC is also prepping a fourth franchise in Dick Wolf's 'Chicago' series, with 'Chicago Justice' set to air as a back-door pilot this season in 'Chicago PD,'" writes THR.
NBC is definitely taking cues from viewers and saturating the network with more meat from fan-favorite series.
