The show "House of Cards" presents a lot of flawed characters, and even President Frank Underwood's (Kevin Spacey) ever-reliable chief-of-staff Doug Stamper (Michael Kelly) has a personal demon to contend with.

Stamper is a recovering alcoholic who unfortunately fell off the wagon during the season 3 finale.

"He's an addictive man," Kelly told The Telegraph of his character.

Even though Stamper is not someone most people look up to, fans of the show have thanked Kelly for giving an honest portrayal of a struggling alcoholic.

"So many alcoholics have thanked me for showing what it's really like, that thing of saying: 'I can have one glass of wine because I've beaten it,'" said Kelly.

During season 4, Kelly is pleased that his character got back to work with Underwood.

"It was nice to go to work as Doug in sweat pants and a t-shirt [rather than Stamper's traditional suit and tie] for a year," he said. "But part of me missed being with Kevin. We went from sharing two or three scenes a day to four scenes over a season."

Kelly recalled that it was not easy working with Spacey during the first few seasons because the actor is very reserved. However, he is glad that they were able to build up their friendship.

"For the whole first season, we didn't really talk," said Kelly. "He's a very private man and it takes years to get to know him. There were never any ups or downs over that period. It was just a long, slow build. I consider us friends now and he's always looked out for me. And he's a riot, really funny."

Even Joel Kinnaman, who played Underwood's rival Will Conway, is a huge fan of Spacey.

"I really enjoyed the scenes I had with Kevin," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "We had, during the Democratic Convention and the scenes we had in this little room - that was a lot of fun."

Catch "House of Cards" season 5 next year on Netflix.
