Since we're talking spring fashion, it's only fitting that the Obamas arrived to rain in Cuba yesterday. It's a frustration that characterizes dressing for the finnicky season—how do you find something that's on-trend, easy to wear, and appropriate should the weather turn steamy, chilly, or, ugh, wet? Malia and Sasha Obama both got it just right in short dresses they paired with sneakers, the classic shoe of choice for long days of playing tourist that also happens to be having a major style moment. Plus, they're a wise pick for inclement weather since cleaning them is easy, and you're less likely to slip and slide on rainy surfaces (versus slick leather sandals or heels).
Younger sis Sasha picked a black Shoshanna dress with contrasting white details at the neck and running vertically down the front (shop it here for $385). Along with the skater shoes, the accent keeps the look young and breezy, and it confirms something we're noticing about her style: She likes tactile embellishments. Mom Michelle is wearing a spring-friendly Carolina Herrera dress.
Malia's print-block dress pairs a dark ditsy floral on the bottom with a lighter version up top. While blooms are a springtime fashion classic, the tinier style speaks to this season's obsession with the '70s. Her bright-white kicks are a comfy way to finish off the look, though we just spotted a clue that this is a major shoe girl. Peek at the above snap of the fam stepping off the plane, would you? Malia's in something different, wearing of-the-moment lace-up flats! We love both styles equally, but we're impressed with the fashion foresight. When it comes to iffy early spring days, keeping a second pair of shoes handy is genius. Switch them out as needed because, honestly, who'd want to ruin cute leather skimmers in the rain?
One of the major reasons we've fallen so in love with both girls' style? The way they constantly inject personality into their picks, reminding the world that not only do they like to play with fashion, but, hey, they're still just your average American teens at heart. In this snap you can see Sasha's skinny black choker, a favorite accessory of hers that was undoubtedly inspired by today's Insta-models. Malia's pretty trumpet sleeves, flaring out right at her elbow, are also on full display in this side shot. Nice little bursts of personality, huh?
The girls are traveling with their parents as their spring break trip, and it's already been a big year for both. Earlier this month they attended their first formal White House dinner and looked so grown-up!
