Harry Shum Jr. is making waves for playing the mysterious Magnus Bane on Freeform's "Shadowhunters," an adaptation of Cassandra Clare's hit book series "The Mortal Instruments." Aside from effectively giving life to the beloved character, there are many interesting things to take note of about the actor. Below are some of them.
1. He grew up in Costa Rica.
Shum and his family lived in Costa Rica until he was 6 before moving to the U.S. While in Costa Rica, he spoke Spanish and English. But when he moved to San Francisco, he also started learning how to speak Cantonese.
2. He started getting into dancing in high school.
"I actually got dared to audition for the dance team," the actor told Vanity Fair. "All my track-and-field buddies dared me to audition, and I was one of the few guys who did it ... From there I grew a passion for it, and started looking for parts, and I landed parts in ['You Got Served', 'Stomp the Yard' and 'Step Up 2: The Streets']."
Shum doesn't want to say which dance genre he's most at home with though and refers to his style as "unclassified" or "fusion."
3. He's a self-proclaimed food daredevil.
He likes trying out different kinds of foods, even the weird ones.
In an interview with Audrey Magazine, the actor said: "I went to the Philippines, and I tried jumping shrimp where it's like a live shrimp and you pour a lime over it, and it's like jumping, it's still moving, and you squeeze the head and the tail and you eat the body of it. That was really good. And you could still taste the ocean on it."
He's also eaten crickets from Hawaii, but his non-weird favorite food is Asian food.
4. He appeared on the iPod Nano commercial.
Shum showed off his dance moves on the ad for the iPod Nano, which was the first iPod to have a video-recording ability.
5. One of his idols is Gene Kelly.
"I just love the fusion, his sense of style and his stage presence was impeccable," the actor said of Kelly, according to Zap2it.
