Spring Denim Trends 2016: What to Shop, What to Stop Wearing

Fact: Blue jeans will never, ever go out of style. At its core, a good pair of denim is timeless, boundary-trescending, and able to anchor almost any outfit you can imagine. That said, slight switch-ups do happen from season to season. To prepare you for spring 2016, we touched base with a whole slew of denim designers to ask what was trending and what should be put on the proverbial back burner. From some vintage inspiration to a former weekend must-have that's ready to be retired, this season's denim rules are ready for studying.

So, what do the pros think you need in your closet this season? Read on for the top three styles to buy now, plus what not to wear.

High-rise.
"It's all about classic, high-rise vintage fits," Catherine Ryu, Citizens of Humanity Women's creative director, said matter of factly, pointing to inspiration from decades past. "Fits reminiscent from the '90s are making a strong comeback." If you think you've already got some high-waisted styles in your arsenal, check to see if you can rise up even higher. "High-waisted and higher-waisted are becoming more and more important for us," Tim Kaeding, MOTHER co-founder and designer, added.

Raw hems.
If you haven't already tried out the unfinished look, now's the time. "Undone, raw hems are definitely a denim trend that's sticking around," Paige Adams-Geller, the model-turned-jean-genius behind Paige Denim, mused. The latest iteration of the look? "High-waisted cutoffs, whether done as a straight leg or a cropped flare."

Ankle crops.
"My ankle obsession is having it's well-deserved moment now that the cropped bootcut and cropped straight are important fits," Peggi Jewell, vice president of design and merchandising at 7 For All Mankind, said. "Unlike a traditional skinny, the slightly more open leg open showcases this too-often ignored part of your leg, and allows you to show off those shoes that made you smile when putting them on. This season's version is a modern take on a vintage classic, and the perfect canvas to showcase personal style versus chasing a trend."

As to what experts say you should stash and store away until the trend pendulum swings back? Low-rise fits and boyfriends. If you're distraught about that last point, take heart: There's a new version that gives the same comfortable feeling. "Boyfriend jeans are taking a backseat to wider legs and higher rises with tighter-fitting hips," Mother's Kaeding told us.

Consider giving your bolder pairs a rest too. "Colors and prints are taking a backseat to authentic denim washes," Michelle Yu, the creative director and co-owner of Schoen by Yu, said (boyfriends and low-rise styles also made her no-no list). The vivid hues and patterns we all collectively freaked for in the 2000s have been supplanted by rich indigo rinses that connect with the '90s trend that's bubbling up.

Should your favorite skinny jeans be feeling just a touch too tight, we've got genius hacks for making them work.
