"Containment" star Chris Wood recently sat down to discuss the first season of his new show and hinted that his character Jake Riley is going to fall in love with Katie Frank.
In the series premiere of "Containment," a deadly virus has struck Atlanta, Georgia and some parts of the city are quarantined in an attempt to save lives.
The virus came to America after a young man sneaks a ride to the U.S. by hiding out in the hold of cargo plane. Unfortunately, he is carrying a modified version of avian influenza, which spreads like wildfire to his family and the doctor assigned to treat him.
Jake wound up stuck inside of the quarantine with Katie, a young elementary school teacher who went on an ill-fated field trip to the hospital.
Those who are stuck inside of the quarantined area have to adhere to staying four to six feet apart in order to keep the virus from spreading.
Wood told Gotham that Jake is going to be tasked with keeping peace inside of quarantine in an upcoming episode.
"Jake gets stuck with the worst responsibilities you can get stuck with," he explained. "He's the kind of person who would rather be a follower than a leader and he's put in a circumstance where he's forced to be the head of control inside the quarantine zone. He's definitely getting a lot of dirty jobs and is more the face of the virus than anyone else in the show because he's forced to go try to bring in people who are sick. He's a cop so he's given all these tasks of trying to maintain peace inside. He sort of gets the short end of the stick."
The "Containment" star added that even though Jake is forced into a leadership role, having to stay inside of the quarantine area offers him the opportunity to grow closer to Katie.
"Jake and Katie meet in very unfortunate and poor circumstances for romance to develop but I find that when they have this sort of spark kick in, it becomes some of the most important moments of their lives because they're surrounded by darkness and sadness," Wood said. "They try to grip on this positive feeling, this warmth that they find with each other even in the midst of chaos. That's why they both end up gravitating towards each other, because this is the only life they are given in such a dark time."
"Containment" executive producer Julie Plec added to Vulture that Jake and Katie are going to have a forbidden romance in season one and will be forced to figure out how they can date without being able to touch one another.
"To me, TV relationships work at their best when there are deep feelings, longing and interest that is unrequitable," she explained. "So some of my favorite relationships in drama are based on people that can't really be together. This is the perfect built-in obstacle because you want to brush their hand with yours or put your hand on their arm to show you're flirting, but you can't do any of that without putting your life at risk."
"Containment" is currently airing on Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. ET on the CW.
