The fact that Katy Perry went totally thematic in Jeremy Scott Couture at last night's Academy of Country Music Awards wouldn't have been a surprise a year ago, but now? We were wow'ed. After all, the popstar kicked off the year at the Golden Globes in a supremely elegant pink Prada gown—so not her usual. It was the handiwork of celebrity stylist Leslie Fremar, a go-to name when stars want to revise or upgrade their style image (she was the woman who encouraged Reese Witherspoon to try black!).
"What I do is simple and pared-down. It's thoughtful, but it's not eccentric," she said, adding that for Perry, "it was about making it simple." We assumed the new look meant that funky, playful Perry would be left to arena stages around the world, while a more sophisticated, grown-up version would grace the red carpet. In other words, her days of dressing like a Disney princess were over.
Well, rewind that because we're back to kooky Katy. Moreover, she did it twice last night, wearing Jeremy Scott for both the carpet and a performance alongside Dolly Parton. We're definitely into having fun with fashion, but are still registering surprise that the new look didn't stick. Clues to the slip back to a costume approach might be found in an interview Fremar gave after the Globes, leading us to wonder if Perry 2.0 will be reserved for times when her artistry isn't on display. "You want to be respectful...you're there honoring people's work," she said of the restrained Prada. From here on out, we're expecting refined Perry for non-music industry events and all sorts of flair for appearances that focus on her as a singer.
Other red-carpet news we've found fascinating? Listen to Jennifer Garner explain how they more or less move your organs around to accommodate certain gowns.
