Director Bryan Singer is able to identify with the characters from his new movie, "X-Men: Apocalypse," because he, like them, struggled with prejudice and acceptance even at a very young age.

"I'm gay or bisexual, whatever, so that probably factored into it a bit because mutancy is discovered at that age in puberty when you're different from your whole neighborhood and your family and you feel very isolated," he told Collider. "So that probably factored into my decision to do it to some degree at least, and I wanted to get involved in action-adventure and this was an avenue to do it."

Singer said that ultimately, "X-Men: Apocalypse" is all about the story of how these lost and confused mutants are brought together as a single unit.

"So there's a lot of rebirths and stuff, but in the end ultimately this movie, in the final thing, this movie is about the story of the formation of the X-Men. That's really what this is," he said.

The director also teased that there are three budding romances in the film - Hank and Raven's, Jean and Scott's, as well as Professor Charles Xavier and Moira's.

In fact, Singer is already planning to use Moira's son Kevin MacTaggert, also known as Proteus, as the next possible "X-Men" villain.

"There's a lot visually you could do with a character like that," he said, per Comic Book Movie.

However, as dear as the franchise is to Singer's heart, the director admitted that he does not have the emotional strength to create another "X-Men" film for now.

"Abandoning the franchise is not something I think about. But I could not roll into another X-Men movie tomorrow. And I hope not to. I hope to take a break," he said.

"X-Men: Apocalypse" will hit cinemas on May 27.
