Netflix is stepping into the talk show arena with Chelsea Handler at the helm.
"Chelsea" is set to premiere May 11 and air Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. According to the series synopsis, courtesy of Screen Crush,"Chelsea" will feature a combination of Handler travelling around the world and taping in front of a live audience in the Sony studios.
"Handler tossed the traditional talk show model out the window for Netflix's first-ever talk show. Join Chelsea as she travels around the world - from Russia, Japan, and Mexico City, across the U.S. and back again to Sony Pictures Studios, where she tapes in front of a LIVE in-studio audience - to explore the subjects that matter most to you," the synopsis reads.
There will also be a lot of celebrity guest stars, "many of whom will be celebrities whose faces you have plastered on your bedroom ceiling (am I the only one who still does that?)."
The show will showcase Handler having in-depth discussions about culture, health, politics, sports, parenting and much more.
Though this is very new for Netflix, Handler is a talk show veteran. Her late-night talk show, "Chelsea Lately" ran on the E! network from 2007 to 2014. Based on her success with "Chelsea Lately," we can expect great things from "Chelsea." The real thing to watch out for will be how Netflix handles this new realm.
Netflix is best known for releasing seasons at once and the trend-setting service for binge watching. With "Chelsea," however, it is climbing into the arena somewhere between how it usually does things and network television. It will definitely be an interesting new realm of entertainment if it should succeed.
