If you decide to upgrade to the newest iPhone, you're going to lose something that's likely pretty important to you: the headphone jack. Apple showed off the new iPhone 7 on Wednesday, revealing that the rumors are true—it's ditching the connection for your headphones.
So does Apple not want you to listen to music anymore? Not exactly. Apple removed the headphone jack for a number of reasons. That place where your headphones used to go was replaced with another speaker, so the iPhone 7 will be able to play music for a group much louder than it's ever been able to do and will make having speakerphone convos MUCH more reasonable. Removing the headphone port also made room inside the phone for more electronics, so the iPhone 7 will be even better from a computer standpoint than it was before.
So what about headphones?
You've got options. Apple will be including a pair of headphones in the box with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus that connect to the phone's lightning port. That's the port you use to charge the phone, and you've actually been able to connect headphones to it since the port debuted with the iPhone 5. That means there are actually a ton of headphones already on the market that connect that way. Apple says there are actually 9,000 different accessories on the market that use it.
If you're dying to use a pair of wired headphones you already own, then there will also be an adapter in the box that you can connect to the lightning port and get a traditional headphone connection.
And there's always Bluetooth. The idea behind a move like this is that a lot of things are going wireless anyway. There are an amazing amount of Bluetooth headphone options out there that will all work with the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.
Apple is also going to start selling a pair of headphones called AirPods. They look almost identical to the earbuds that come with your iPhone, except they don't have wires. They do have a built-in microphone, however, so you'll be able to do things like chat with Siri or talk on the phone with them in, just like you can with regular headphones. Those will be available in October for $159.
So, no need to stress! If you want to use older headphones, just plug in that Apple-supplied adapter, and if you're already using Bluetooth headphones or don't mind using the headphones included in the box, then you're all set!
