Fancy yourself as Stranger Things' Eleven, Carrie or Catwoman this Halloween? Whether you want a classic costume or to nod to a 2016 pop culture hit, do horror in style with these click-to-buy outfit builders that hit the right note between ghoulish and girly.
Beyoncé in Lemonade
The rippling mustard Roberto Cavalli gown that Beyoncé wears in her political and highly personal visual album Lemonade is bound to make a zesty costume contender. Find a mustard chiffon mini with bouncing layers of chiffon and sheer inserts to reveal a leopard print bra underneath. Oh, and don’t forget your baseball bat.

Suicide Squad’s Harley Quinn
2016’s anti-hero blockbuster Suicide Squad saw Margot Robbie star as demented super-villain Harley Quinn. With her smeared clown make-up, ripped fishnets, hot pants and studded jewellery, Robbie looked like a Cirque de Soleil acrobat on the loose from a mental asylum. Make sure you dress scantily and act off your proverbial rocker if attempting.

Hillary Clinton
She’s known for her sharply cut trouser suits, and the fiery red Ralph Lauren ‘pantsuit’ Hillary Clinton wore for the first televised presidential debate was no exception. Make sure your hair is perfectly quaffed, your demeanour full of determination, and then find another poor soul to dress up as Donald Trump.

Ghostbusters
The female-led remake of Ivan Reitman’s 1984 fantasy-comedy Ghostbusters, starring Leslie Jones, Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig and Kate McKinnon will appeal to those who want to travel as a pack this Halloween. Try making your own proton packs out of old cereal boxes for a makeshift nod to the full ghost busting look.

Stranger Things' Eleven
According to fashion site Lyst, Eleven is set to be the most popular Halloween costume this year, as a pink Peter Pan collar dress by ASOS was viewed once every 3 minutes on the site in the run up to the holiday. Offset your sugary pink dress with tube socks, Converse and a pack of waffles (if you're a Stranger Things novice, here's why waffles are crucial, plus more character costume ideas.)

Star Wars' Rey
Orphan, loner, junk scavenger, Jedi? Daisy Ridley’s Star Wars character, Rey, is the first female hero in the movie franchise. Her draped and belted dusty grey ensemble would be simple to replicate, and easily identifiable if you execute the hair knots correctly.

Jackie O
One of the world’s most enduring style icons is receiving extra attention of late owing to the upcoming release of Jackie, a presidential biopic starring Natalie Portman as Jackie O. Keep your look prim and proper on All Hallow’s Eve, then splash some fake blood on your skirt suit for good measure.

Cruella de Vil
No Dalmation pups need be harmed in the recreation of the tyrannical fur lover, whose name is a pun on the word ‘cruel’ and ‘devil’. Stock up on faux fur prints, diamanté and have fun attempting to dye your hair half white and half black.
Clockwise from top left: Ruby Mae maxi, £179, Coast; Colour hairspray, £2.99 each, Superdrug; Leopard print coat, £119, M&S; Diamante choker, £7.99, New Look
Catwoman
Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry and Anne Hathaway have all moonlighted as sassy fictional superhero Catwoman in recent years, but it's Lee Meriwether's Sixties siren that captured our imagination. With a shiny second-skin suit, bandit style mask and cat ears, there's something wonderfully DIY and easy to copy about her feline façade.

Wednesday Addams
Pale, plaited youngster Wednesday Addams is obsessed with death and the macabre. Though her deadpan wit is optional Wednesday's morbid schoolgirl style is easy to replicate. Pop a sharp white collar on a dark long-sleeved dress and keep everything else a complete black out.
Clockwise from top left: Collar swing dress, £12, Wearall.com; Rich liquid foundation in pure white, £31, Illamasqua; Bumble & Bumble black hair powder, £28, Look Fantastic; 1460 boots, £115, Dr. Martens
Carrie
Gore-focussed revellers need look no further than Sissy Spacek's tormented character Carrie, from the 1976 supernatural horror film that takes the protagonist's name. Prepare for a messy dressing-up session.
Clockwise from top left: Peach cami, £12.50, Dorothy Perkins; Liquid blood, £7.60, Screen Face; Matte nail polish, £6, Topshop; Karate ballerinas, £46, Topshop; Lip and cheek smudge, £1, Topshop
Velma Dinkley
"My glasses! I can't see without my glasses!" Scooby-Doo's nerdy gang membe Velma might always solve the mystery, but she's got zero fashion sense. Her tangy orange knits and thick-rimmed glasses are an easy Halloween win; just remember her favourite goofy expression: "jinkies!"

Ab Fab

Lydia Deetz
A poster girl for awkward adolescents, the gothic teen, as played by Winona Ryder in 1988 cult film Beetlejuice, is an alternative take on gory Halloween bridalwear. Don’t forget to finish off your blood red dress with a slicked up mullet fringe.

Daenerys Targaryen
Game of Thrones’ Daenerys Targaryen might spend most of her time trekking through desert lands conquering kingdoms in what appears to be a few rags, but she does know the merit of a statement gown – particularly in a shocking shade of blue. This is a look that befits comfort by way of flat shoes, and layers. Just add plenty of cuffs and chokers to top it all off. Oh, and a convincing, white-blonde wig if you can find one.
