Well this news is no less than fantastic: J.K. Rowling has announced that the upcoming film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will actually be the first in a series of five. Yes, five.
Rowling joined the cast of Fantastic Beasts on stage as a surprise guest for a event taking place simultaneously in London and Los Angeles that was broadcast live online. "We always knew that it was going to be more than one movie—we knew that from the start—so we set a trilogy as a sort of placeholder, because we knew there would be more than one movie," she revealed. "But we’ve now, I’ve now done the plotting properly, so we’re pretty sure it’s going to be five movies."
And in case anyone still had doubts about the number of films we can expect from the author/screenwriter, Rowling later took to Twitter to clear things up once and for all.
Plus, Rowling revealed that the script for the second Fantastic Beasts film is nearly complete. According to Variety, the second in the series is slated for release on Nov. 16, 2018, and the third is scheduled to come out in 2020.
And guys, it will definitely be five movies.
Fans watching the event also got a look at where these five films might eventually take us. Rowling revealed in a featurette shown at the event that the movies would follow the rise of a powerful wizard named Gellert Grindelwald (whom you may remember from Harry Potter) and his famous duel with Albus Dumbledore (whom you couldn't forget from Harry Potter even if you tried) in 1945.
“We’re talking about the first time a wizard rose and threatened the world order. This was always where I was interested in going. This is what I wanted to do,” she said in the featurette.
So it seems we have many years of Fantastic Beasts films to look forward to. Let's not get ahead of ourselves, though; the first one hits theaters on Nov. 18.
