Soon, you may be able to watch Netflix anywhere—even in places where you don't have an Internet connection. The company is supposedly in the process of working on a a "download-to-go option," according to a new report at LightReading. "We know from our sources within the industry that Netflix is going to launch this product," industry insider Dan Taitz—who specializes in software that allows videos to be downloaded to smartphones—told the publication. "My expectation is that by the end of the year Netflix will be launching download-to-go as an option for their customers."

The number of shows available as offline options, however, will likely be selective. Another industry expert suggested to LightReading that it will almost certainly include the streaming company's original content like Orange Is the New Black and Stranger Things—which makes sense when you think of it; sorting out royalties is where offline content could get tricky.

When questioned for the report, Netflix didn't give away too much information but smartly stayed vague. "While our focus remains on delivering a great streaming experience, we are always exploring ways to make the service better," said a representative. "We don't have anything to add at this time."

Earlier this year, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings didn't rule out the option, as NME points out, and said the company will "keep an open mind."

If music streaming services are anything to go by though, the decision to allow for offline content is inevitable—and will make airport travel at least a little more bearable.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
