The latest episode of "Shadowhunters," the TV series adaptation of Cassandra Clare's hit "The Mortal Instruments" book series, dropped a major bomb: Clary Fray (Katherine McNamara), the show's protagonist, is the daughter of Valentine (Alan Van Sprang), the series' main villain.
Fans of the book series already know of this fact, but it wasn't revealed as early as it was on the show. This makes the TV series' story a bit more linear. But does this also mean that the show won't have any surpises left?
Showrunner Ed Decter has teased that they will not be going the same direction as the books.
"We are absolutely starting from the beginning of the books and we stay unbelievably true to the spirit of the books," he said during the Television Critics Association press tour, as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter. "We love the books and that's what got us invovled with the project to begin with."

McNamara echoed Decter's remark, telling Entertainment Tonight: "We basically have the first season the same story as the first book. From point A to point B, we pretty much do the same thing. But the way in which we get there, we changed a few things, because we want to make it exciting for people who know the books cover to cover, and people who are new to the world."
There are still many things to discover in the world of the Shadowhunters. Here's the most immediate thing to look forward to: Episode 3, titled "Dead Man's Party."
"With Simon being held captive at The Hotel DuMort, Clary pleads with Jace, Alec and Isabelle to help her rescue her best friend. As the team readies for the mission, Jace helps Clary learn more about her Shadowhunter powers, Isabelle turns to her favorite Seelie for Intel, and Alec begins to question Jace's motives and his place in their partnership.
Meanwhile, a very scared Simon gets very up close and personal with Camille, the leader of the vampire clan."
"Shadowhunters" returns on air on Freeform on Jan. 26, 9 p.m.
