"Shadowhunters" star Matthew Daddario has opened up about playing the fan-favorite character in Cassandra Clare's "The Mortal Instruments" book series: Alec Lightwood.
In an interview with KSite, the actor shared his thoughts about his character's sexuality and how challenging it is for him to play someone who has imposed a lot of restrictions on himself.
"Obviously, being gay is just not even sort of in his visible realm of things that he's allowed to do or allowed to be," he said. "He's a traditionalist in a lot of ways. But that's at a tremendous cost to him emotionally, and it affects him in a way that makes him less and less a human."
The actor also shared what kind of relationship between his character and Dominic Sherwood's character Jace the series will explore.

"I think that Alec is confused about his feelings for Jace," he said. "There's a certain aspect; the fact that this is his parabatai. This is a person that he loves ... So, we touch on it. I think that it's a dificult thing for Alec."
Daddario also shared how Alec's life will change after meeting Magnus Bane (Harry Shum Jr.).
"Once Alec meets Magnus, it becomes impossible for him to continue forcing things out of his mind and pushing things to his side," the actor said, adding, "It becomes too much because he feels something that he can't just push away."
Daddario previously talked about Magnus and Alec's relationship in an interview with Comic Book Resources.
"We have realized that, and have tried to stay true to the characters," the actor said when asked to comment about the impact of his character's arc to "TMI" readers who are part of the LGBT community.
Shum also shared his thoughts about the relationship between his and Daddario's characters, saying: "For us, we wanted to treat it with sensitivity. We wanted to have a base where it stems from, why these two are attracted to each other. We are in this world that's a Shadowhunter world, and it reflects real life. We're living in a world where it's a lot more open ... to me, that's powerful."
Catch Daddario as Alec when "Shadowhunters" premieres Jan. 12 on Freeform.
