"The Muppets" debut on ABC drew big numbers for the network when the show debuted early in the fall, but its lagging viewership has the network wondering just why a show with beloved characters isn't working?
At the TCA winter press tour, ABC President Paul Lee commented on why he felt the show just isn't keeping fans interest.
"The show itself didn't quite feel it had the joy and the laughter and the heart that it should have," Lee stated in a story published by Variety.
Lee also shared that he isn't as pessimistic as he sounds regarding "The Muppets."
He shared he also had "high, high hopes" for series when it returned from its winter break.
"I'm encouraged by five scripts that I've seen from new showrunner Kristin Newman," Lee remarked.
Newman was brought in last year to replace showrunner Bob Kushell.
The major issue with "The Muppets" was that it was being looked at by viewers of the characters as standard family entertainment fare, while, in reality, the show was looking to grab a piece of the adult viewership.
This made some of the situations the beloved characters were put in too adult for young viewers, even though the show aired in the eight o'clock hour on ABC.
The series had been taken to task by the watchdog organization Parents Television Council.
The council released research on the first four episodes of the freshman show, which found that the series exposed children to sexual innuendos, drug use or alcohol use every three and a half minutes.
In a press release on their official website, the organization revealed their findings that were revealed to be quite damming for the freshman ABC series.
"The iconic stars of the show, Kermit, and Miss Piggy, have delivered nearly half of all sexual innuendos and references on the show. Additionally, one bar scene in the fourth episode was long enough to consume almost one-quarter of the show's screen time, during which Muppet characters were shown drinking and becoming drunk from beer, wine, and hard liquor," it revealed.
"The Muppets" airs on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. EST on ABC.
