Former Pussycat Doll singer Nicole Scherzinger has been cast in the role of Penny for ABC's small-screen retool of the classic 1987 film "Dirty Dancing."
The role of Penny was played by Cynthia Rhodes in the 1987 feature film.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed that the three-hour television movie will be written and executive produced by Jessica Sharzer of "American Horror Story" and "The L Word" fame.
The film will revolve around the character of Baby (Abigail Breslin), a young woman who vacations with her parents at a Catskill Mountains resort.
During her uneventful summer, Baby is swept off her feet by Johnny Castle (Colt Prattes), a handsome dance instructor.
Scherzinger's character of Penny is Johnny's dance partner and part of the entertainment staff at the resort.
In the story, Penny and Johnny used to be lovers, but they remained friends and were the unofficial leaders of their group of dance friends.
After a miscarriage where she lost the baby of her lover, one of the resort's waiters, Penny was unable to dance at an event she had booked alongside Johnny.
To help the couple, Penny and Johnny enlisted Baby and taught her how to dance and replace her in the gig.
The film also stars Debra Messing as Marjorie Houseman, Baby's mother.
Cynthia Rhodes, who played Penny in the film, is the ex-wife of singer Richard Marx. The two have three sons together, Brandon, Lucas and Jesse.
The Hollywood Reporter explained that this part will bring the former Pussycat Doll dancer and singer back to ABC after she won season 10 of "Dancing With the Stars."

An official premiere date for "Dirty Dancing" has not yet been announced by ABC.
