Dirty politics is still very much the status-quo in 'House of 'Cards season 4.
Last we left the Underwoods, Claire had decided to leave Frank and let him head to the New Hampshire primaries by himself.
The main question going into season 4 was where Frank and Claire stood? At the start of the premiere, Frank has no idea where his wife is. He is down in the polls in New Hampshire and is flying off the handle figuring out how he is going to spin making appearances without his better half.
During the premiere episode, an agitated Frank has a nightmare in his hotel room. It turned out to be one of the most disturbing scenes in the episode. In the nightmare, Frank sees Claire sitting in a chair across from him. She gives him a subtle smile, and then the next moment Frank punches her in the stomach. The two become intertwined in this vicious brawl. Frank throws Claire into the mirror and then he tries to choke her. Claire then stabs him. It was very hard to watch.
Though it was a nightmare, the real-world distaste they have for each other is very real.
The trailers and promotional posters for the new season teased that the First Lady and the President would go head-to-head in some manner.
The premiere revealed that Claire is making a run at Congress. After leaving Frank, Claire went to her hometown of Texas--to her mother's house — to try and launch her campaign for Congress in the 30th, and she enlists the help of Democratic consultant Leann (Neve Campbell).
The last thing Frank wants is for Claire to be involved in her own campaign and not by his side. Therefore, when Frank learns of Claire's plan, he tries to shut it down. Frank warns Leann against helping Claire — more like threatens.
Frank then heads to Texas to try and get Claire back on the campaign trail. In that time, rumors begin to fly that the presidential couple is on the rocks.
Nothing could be worse for Underwood 2016 than a presidential divorce. But Frank always has a plan up his sleeve. Frank learns — it's unclear how long he has known for — that Claire's mother is battling cancer. He tells Claire that they have to make an announcement that Claire went to Texas only to help her sick mother and that she and Frank are not having any marital problems. In exchange, Frank has to stay out of Claire's campaign.
Frank agrees, but we know that Frank is not a man of his word.
Another big shocker of the episode is that Lucas is back! Yeah, remember Lucas? Most of us don't since he has been gone for over a season. Well, he is back in the fold now, and I suspect he is going to make some trouble.
We first lay eyes on Lucas in a jail cell. Cut to later on in the episode when Lucas is getting his cellmate to talk about the crime he committed. It is unclear what his cellmate had to do with anything, but by the end of the episode, Lucas is set free. Well, not exactly free, he's put in witness protection.
Though Lucas seems like he is going to be off the radar for a while, we can be sure at some point he will be back to drive a wrench into Frank.
