"Suits" has surprised fans time and again with its shocking season finales, but Patrick J. Adams, who plays Mike Ross in the series, believes that the season 5 finale "25th Hour" is in a class of its own.
"I think it's more of a game changer than we've ever really done. We've had a couple of major, major moments where the show has taken a twist, but this is the first time that we're doing something [where] you can't put all the pieces back exactly where they were before," he told TV Line.
There are several questions that need to be answered before the show wraps up. Will government prosecutor Anita Gibbs win in her fraud case against Mike? Will Mike stop working for Pearson Specter Litt? Or better yet - will any one of them turn each other in?
Adams believes that the writers took a great risk this season to "push these characters in new directions," and he teased that the show will never "quite be the same."
Even if Mike ends up in prison, Adams is confident that his character will turn up fine.
"I think Mike is extremely resourceful. In some ways, it'd be like hitting reset. When we started the show, Mike was a total fish out of water in this new law firm and having to quickly get his bearings and figure out how to exist in this new world. I don't think it'd be much different in prison," he said.
One person who does not agree with the ending for season 5 is Meghan Markle, who plays Mike's on-screen fiancée Rachel Zane.
When she first read the script, she immediately called show creator Aaron Korsh and told him, "It doesn't make sense. Why is it gonna end like that? I don't get it. I don't agree with it."
Eventually, Markle came to terms with Korsh's decision. "He's the creator of our show and you don't want to question the choices he's making," she told Yahoo! TV.
"Suits" airs every Wednesday at 10 p.m. on USA.
