Fans have come to know and love Ellie Kemper thanks to her hilarious character Erin Hannon on "The Office" and her first big leading role as Kimmy Schmidt on "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt."
Although the actress has become a household name thanks to her incredibly funny Netflix series, there's still a ton we don't know about the 35-year-old actress.
Get to know more about the Missouri native, and check out our list of the top five things you didn't know about "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" star Ellie Kemper below:
5. When she first moved to New York, she picked up smoking to seem cool: During a past interview with night time talk show host Conan O'Brien, Kemper revealed she tried smoking cigarettes when she first moved to the big apple, so she would appear to be cooler than what she was back in her St. Louis days. Her smoking stint didn't last long at all.
"One thing I did when I first moved here... I took up smoking for four days," she said. "I don't smoke anymore. But I thought, 'Well I'm trying to figure out what I'm doing. Maybe this will open up some new possibilities?' And so I practiced smoking in my apartment."
4. Her favorite exercise is running: "I love running. I've been running ever since middle school. In terms of clearing your head and restarting everything, I love running," she revealed to Self magazine. "About a year ago, I tore my plantar fascia and I couldn't run, so I had to come up with something else. And I started doing SoulCycle. It's absolutely cult-y. In the very best way. And they have the SoulCycle gear, and the apparel... They know what they're doing. But I think they work because the classes are really good. The music's great, it's dark. You feel transported and I feel completely refreshed when I come out. I started doing it about a year ago, I guess. And I also like that there's a team aspect to it. It helps keep me motivated."
3. She's neighbors with Tina Fey: Not only does Kemper work with Fey, who is a writer/co-creator of the Netflix series, but the actress also lives just a block away from her boss. According to the Observer, Kemper and her husband, Michael Koman, recently purchased a sick pad on New York's Upper West Side, which just so happens to be one block over from Fey's new two-unit apartment.
2. Jon Hamm was her high school drama teacher: Back when Kemper was just a teen with a dream in Missouri, she had the pleasure of learning her craft from none other than "Mad Men" star and UBKS villain, Jon Hamm.
"He was my drama teacher for one year of high school. It was only one year, but I have to say, he made such a difference in that short amount of time. He was a great teacher, and he was leading our comedy and improv classes, so he taught me the greatest lesson for a comedian, which is that when you're performing onstage-or, really, in a lot of life-and someone throws something crazy at you, you just have to say, "Yes, and." And build on it. Just say yes and go for it," she revealed during a recent interview with Elle magazine.
1. She comes from one of the most prominent families in Missouri: Kemper hails from one of the wealthiest families in her home state. The actress is the granddaughter of Mildred Lane Kemper, who became the namesake of Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum at Washington State University in St. Louis. Her father, David Woods Kemper, was the chairman and chief executive officer of Commercer Bancshares, a banking company founded by her great grandfather, William Thornton Kemper, Sr. Her little sister, Carrie Kemper, also happens to be an actress and TV writer.
