"Grey's Anatomy" season 12 , episode 21, "You're Gonna Need Someone on Your Side" saw Stephanie (Jerrika Hinton) calling things off with Kyle (Wilmer Valderrama), a musician with multiple sclerosis. Fans were shocked to see Stephanie writing a letter instead of telling Kyle personally that she wanted to break up.
Hinton has opened up about her character's controversial decision in an interview with TVLine, saying she was shocked when she read the script for the episode and called the writers immediately to contest the arc. In the end, however, she conceded and admitted that the move was something that her character was likely to do.
"Stephanie runs away from her feelings," the actress said. "She does not like to confront the source of anything emotionally gooey."

Hinton continued: "We saw it after the Jackson and April thing, the way she kept avoiding Jackson in the hospital... She's the kind of person that likes to shut things off. She has these switches inside her and she is more likely in times of discomfort to power that piece of her down. It's a survival instinct."
Despite the "horrible" move Stephanie made, things will not exactly be over between her and Kyle yet. Kyle will continue to visit Grey Sloan Memorial for his health, and there is a big possibility for them to see each other again.
"What happens now is she's going to have to deal with him again," Hinton told Variety. "And by the sheer nature of that, also deal with what she said, which is break up with him in a brutal, callous way."
The actress added: "And she will continue to struggle with separating the personal from the professional. His health does not improve. And her superior, Amelia, still believes that Stephanie should be able to be a part of the case."
