People have compared the lead female characters of "The Girl On the Train" and "Gone Girl," but author Paula Hawkins does not think that alcoholic Rachel Watson is as unlikable as Amy Dunne.

"I think people draw parallels because you've got an unlikable or difficult female protagonist, the breakdown of a marriage and a missing woman, and also the unreliable narrator," Hawkins told The Guardian.

However, she does not see Rachel as unlikable. "She's let herself spin out of control, but many of us walk a bit close to that line without crossing it. You could imagine if something dramatic happened like a failed marriage or lost job then we might, so that's how I see Rachel. I'm very sympathetic to her," she said.

Hawkins also considers Rachel as a breath of fresh air because she is not like all the other girls found in books.

"I tried to write about people who were ambivalent about marriage and children, and to avoid writing as though a man and a baby is enough to make you happy. I think pinning all your hopes on a relationship is probably a very bad idea," she reflected.

This is the same sentiment shared by lead star Emily Blunt. She told Deadline that it was actually a refreshing change to portray a "damaged" woman on the big screen.

"I just love that it's about addiction and loneliness and voyeurism and what we think we see and don't see. I think it's very relatable," she explained. "We've all ridden the train to work and wondered about the lives of the people on the train, and I think that people relate to that. I love that your heroine, your lead character is the most unreliable witness in the world because she's a drunk."

"The Girl On the Train" will be released on Oct. 7.
