You just got back from vacation and instead of the glowy, clear-skinned version of yourself that you envisioned floating into work, you feel mysteriously haggard. While you can likely blame the post-vacay blues and the return flight for a lot of it (um, they call it a redeye for a reason), there’s a chance you’re making a few common beauty mistakes while you’re away from home. We're here to help: Remember these five tips the next time you’re #outoftheoffice, and your return will be just a little bit smoother.
Mistake #1: Forgetting to wear sunscreen in transit
We all know to apply (and reapply!) sunscreen for a beach day, but you need it on during your trip there, too (try Clinique's Mineral Sunscreen Fluid for Face). Whether you’re road tripping or flying to a remote location, ultraviolet rays are more than likely seeping through the window next to you. “You can even incur sun damage sitting next to a window in your hotel room,” says New York City dermatologist Dr. Dennis Gross. Noted!
Mistake #2: Not washing your face at night
Just because you spent all day at the beach and didn’t wear makeup doesn’t mean you should skip your nightly cleanse. Go ahead and embrace that amazing gritty texture salt water leaves on hair, but leaving layers of sunscreen on your skin can cause breakouts, medical esthetician Jordana Mattioli says. Oil-based cleansers remove everything and won’t strip moisture from skin. At the very minimum, toss some makeup-removing wipes in your carry-on. We love Tyra Beauty Pop It Clean wipes—they come in tiny pods (about twice the size of a quarter) so they take up hardly any room at all.
Mistake #3: Not tailoring your products to the climate you're headed to
If you live in Miami and you’re traveling to Aspen, you won’t need the same skin care you use at home. If you’re going hiking in the mountains (where it's generally dry), bring something richer, and if you’re going tropical, leave your heaviest creams in your medicine cabinet—light gels, like Neutrogena's, and hyaluronic acid serums should be plenty. The same goes for your makeup bag: pack creamy textures for arid climates and powders for humid regions. Ditto, your hair products—lest you have a Monica in Barbados moment. (Of course, you could just play up your texture with these tips.)
Mistake #4: Skimping on protection for your hair
Color your hair? The sun can fade rich tones and turn highlights brassy. Look for UV-protective products and pack a wide-brimmed hat…or tie on a scarf à la Dolce & Gabbana’s Spring 2016 show.
Mistake #5: Packing your entire vanity and medicine cabinet
We could all use a little help in the luggage-lightening department, so pack multi-tasking products that do more than just one thing (think: lipstick/blush sticks, hair/body washes). Mattioli’s favorite do-it-all product: Aquaphor! “It’s great for dry cuticles, taming eyebrows, sunburnt lips… just about any skin ailment,” she says. And don't worry if you leave something behind. These easy hacks have you covered.
