Garry Marshall Movie Moments That Made Us Love Being Women

No one knows how to put women in a league of their own better than Garry Marshall.

The iconic writer, producer, director, and actor died Tuesday night at the age of 81. Today, Hollywood is remembering the incredible legacy Marshall left behind—especially his elevation and representation of women in entertainment. (He was even awarded the Women in Film Lucy Award in 1996 in recognition of "creative works that have enhanced the perception of women.")

From films like Pretty Woman to A League of Their Own to TV shows like Laverne & Shirley, Marshall created female characters who were relatable, funny, strong, and lovable.

In honor of Marshall, we highlighted some moments from his classic movies and TV shows that reminded us why it's awesome to be a badass chick.

Pretty Woman

Vivian always knew what she wanted.

"I want the fairy tale."

Edward: “So what happens after he climbs up and rescues her?” Vivian: “She rescues him right back.”

Woman at polo match: Edward is our most eligible bachelor, everyone is trying to land him. Vivian: Oh, I'm not trying to land him, I'm just using him for sex.

Princess Diaries

Mia was always royally honest.

Laverne & Shirley

The theme song says it all: Give us any chance, we’ll take it. Read us any rule, we’ll break it. We’re gonna make our dreams come true, doing it our way.

A League of Their Own

Get some dirt in your skirt, 'cause these girls were the OG badasses.

"You got yourself in the league. I got you on the train."

"Hi, my name's Mae, and that's more than a name, that's an attitude."

Runaway Bride

Maggie Carpenter knew how to flip a gender script.

I guarantee there'll be tough times. I guarantee that at some point, one or both of us is going to want get out. But I also guarantee...that if I don't ask you to be mine, I'll regret it for the rest of my life. Because I know in my heart...you're the only one for me.

Happy Days

Shoutout to Marion Cunningham for breaking down gender norms and telling her misogynistic husband where he can shove his dinner.

"I was thinking maybe I should get a job."

Overboard

No one has ever told it like it is better than Joanna.

"My children may be rotten, but they're MINE. And I think that they're bright, and sensitive, so I have no doubts whatsoever about their intelligence. I do however have serious doubts about YOURS."
