You might think a watch or an amazing trip would be the ultimate present for your S.O., but Rebecca Robinson's gift to her boyfriend blows those out of the water: The 28-year-old in Sydney donated her kidney to her boyfriend.
She posted a photo to Reddit recently of the two looking tired but happy together in the hospital post-surgery. The comments blew up with outpourings of support, and her responses revealed more touching and sometimes hilarious details about the situation.
Robinson, known as Artemisian11 on Reddit, learned her boyfriend had a rare kidney condition called IgA nephropathy on their second date, though donation didn't come up then. She brought it up herself later on in the relationship. Her kidney will last 20-35 years, she explained, and then her boyfriend will need a new one. After he got the surgery, she said she felt fine and went home to catch up on Game of Thrones and wait for him.
Since this was such a big decision, a psychologist asked her how she'd feel if her boyfriend cheated on her the day after the surgery. Her response? "Mostly amazed that he'd be physically able to!" She also appreciated JasonsBoredAgain's suggestion that she tell him, "Now you can ask him how YOUR organ feels inside HIM!"
When Gorflub decided to be a Debbie Downer and bring up what a complicated breakup this would make for, Robinson was realistic about it. "Ha, it's cool. I figure even if we do I get to know I've basically saved a life," she wrote. "I'm not a bitter person."
