Kerry Washington Gets Real About Photoshop and Hollywood Beauty Standards

Kerry Washington is a beauty force in all the ways. She's not afraid to call out overly retouched Photoshop images of herself, but she's the first to admit she's a complete nail polish obsessive (she just went in on a new collab with OPI). Plus, she's got a lot to say on natural hair and Hollywood's evolving ideals. Here, some pretty solid beauty wisdom from the Scandal star.

Her beauty priorities
"It used to be that there were certain standards and expectations of what beauty meant—a certain kind of shape, nose, hair—but I feel that as a culture we have evolved and become more embracing of the truth that beauty does come in a lot of shapes and forms and colors. We have a long way to go, but it has gotten better."

Her stance on Photoshop
"I think the more we talk about it, the more awareness there is. Photoshopping to that extent is just not necessary. I’m somebody who millions of people tune in to and see every week, so they know what I look like!"

Her hair M.O.
"I use a lot of heat on my hair when I’m working, so when I’m off duty, I use a leave-in conditioner and wear it natural. And I do think Hollywood and society as a whole is way more accepting now of natural hair!"

Her role models
"When I was growing up, there was more of a dichotomy: You had to choose whether you wanted to be smart or pretty; you couldn’t be both. We’ve gotten really lucky in this generation because we have role models like Sheryl Sandberg and Marissa Mayer and Michelle Obama, who aren’t afraid to be both. They’re super fashion-forward and successful, and they aren’t going to apologize for it."

Her best de-stressing tip
"My mother’s a retired professor, and she’s very elegant, but she wasn’t into beauty rituals…except her weekly manicure. It’s a way she was good to herself. It was less about the beauty world and more about her 'me time.'"

Her brow and nail philosophy
"If I have my eyebrows and nails done, I feel good about myself no matter what I’m wearing. I talk a lot with my hands, so nails are important to me. There was also a character decision for Olivia she got kidnapped on the show, I stopped doing manicures because I thought, as part of her PTSD, she couldn’t take care of herself in the same way. Then when she was trying to empower herself again, I started wearing bright polish."

Her go-to bold nail colors
"From my collection, We the Female, ‘Liv’ in the Gray, and Inside the ISABELLEtway are favorites.”

Her skin care essential
“I’m obsessed with the hydrating hyaluronic acid in this gel [pictured above]—I can use it all year round.”

Her no mirror-required makeup
"I'm into easy—these Neutrogena lip crayons are good because they're sheer. I generally have six floating around in my bag."

Her power fragrance
"When I was playing Anita Hill [in HBO’s Confirmation], I asked her what she wore at the time; it was Lancôme Trésor. It really put me in that time and in her conservative elegance."
