As if paying $5 for a cup of coffee wasn't fancy enough, Starbucks has plans to bring us even more upscale beverages and swanky surroundings. The coffee chain just announced it will open a new line of Starbucks stores that will serve up only small-batch brews in larger café environments.
The new stores, which the brand has dubbed Starbucks Reserve-only, could open as early as next year in hundreds of locations across the country, CNN reports. Each store—slated to be at least double the size of your average Starbucks location—will feature manual espresso machines and four brewing methods, allowing customers to truly personalize their reserve beverages.
"We recognize our customers expect and desire a higher level of product and we want to give it to them,” Howard Schultz, Starbucks chief executive officer, said in a press call.
Plus, the company has also invested in Princi, a high-end Italian bakery and pizzeria with five stores in Milan and London, promising to bring even more fine foods into its Starbucks stores and additional Princi bakeries around the world. "This is an opportunity for us to elevate food," Schultz said. "This will once again reaffirm Starbucks’ leadership in all things coffee."
As for the new Starbucks Reserve-only stores, you're sure to hand over more cash for those specialty small-batch brews, though Starbucks has yet to release an official menu or prices. However, research shows we'll happily pay up: Coffee drinkers have tripled in number in the last eight years, according to data from the National Coffee Association, and our taste for gourmet coffee drinks increased, too. In fact, the demand for something more than any ol' cup of Joe more than doubled in the same time period.
