Possible multiple suspects shot and killed three police officers, injuring several more, on Sunday morning in a Baton Rouge shooting.
According to CNN, police received a call about a man with an assault rifle seen walking down Airline Highway. When officers from the Baton Rouge Police Department and the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office responded, at least one suspect (and possibly two more) opened fire on the officers.
“Multiple officers from both agencies sustained injuries and were transported to local hospitals,” said a statement from the sheriff's office.
Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards called the shooting “an unspeakable and unjustified attack” in a statement and offered all of the state's available resources to apprehend the possible remaining suspects. According to reports, one suspect is dead, and the East Baton Rouge sheriff's office confirmed that the two additional alleged suspects may be at large.
The Baton Rouge shooting comes as tensions between civilians and law enforcement have continued to mount this month. On July 5, a Baton Rouge police officer shot and killed Alton Sterling. A police officer also shot and killed Philando Castile in St. Paul, Minnesota, on July 6. These were followed by a deadly sniper attack on police officers on July 7 at a subsequent Black Lives Matter protest in Dallas.
This post will be updated as more details about the shooting come to light.
