"Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" finally returns to the CW tonight after a long winter hiatus.
According to TVOverMind.com, Rebecca (Golden Globe winner Rachel Bloom) rents a party bus for the whole gang so they can all go to the beach together including her ex-boyfriend Josh and his girlfriend Valencia.
This musical comedy will feature the songs "West Covina (Second Reprise)" (sung by Rebecca and Josh) and "Women Gotta Stick Together" (sung by Valencia.)
Though the show hasn't been a ratings hit since premiering last October it's recent hot streak of awards for its star Bloom- she won both the Golden Globe and Critics Choice Award for Best Actress- could change that. The series has averaged a little over a million viewers a week and has not been renewed for a second season yet though it will be airing all 18 episodes of its first season. Bloom revealed at the Golden Globes that Broadway vet Lea Salonga (Miss Saigon) will guest-star on the season finale. Salonga confirmed the guest appearance on Jan. 10. She tweeted: "I guess the news is out!!! I'll be appearing on the season finale of @CW_CrazyXGF! And singing, too! How fun is that?!"
Marc Silver of The Washington Post wrote, "In a few short weeks, "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" has gone from that strange musical comedy show with the possibly offensive title that no one watches (1.07 million a week, which in the world of network TV is pretty paltry) to the award-winning, innovative TV program whose co-creator and star Rachel Bloom has just received a Golden Globe (she licked it and said "It tastes like winning and power. And the Illuminati.") and Critics' Choice award for her performance, and is the subject of a laudatory New York Times profile."
CW President Mark Pedowitz said recently, "We have great faith in the show. We have great faith in [showrunner] Aline McKenna and Rachel. We believe in the show. We stand by the show." He continued, "We believe there's a place on our schedule today for a show like this, and we're going to give it a chance to get seen. You can't beat quality like this. We're the CW. We have defied a lot of odds."
If you just read the outline of the plot it does sound a little silly. Rebecca Bunch (Bloom) leaves her lucrative but depressing corporate law job in New York City to move out to California after running into her ex-boyfriend, Josh, from camp. She follows him back to his hometown of West Covina where she soon finds out he has a girlfriend but in the meantime she starts work a a wacky, laid-back law firm and strikes up a friendship with a coworker and Josh's friend Greg Santino Fontana (Frozen, Broadway's Cinderella). However, the show is really a tour de force of feminism and musical theater (which turns out to be an unstoppable combination) as Bloom has figured out how to find the joy in romantic misery and the utter conundrum of being a single woman in the year 2016.
The "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend" midseason premiere is Jan. 25 at 8 p.m. ET on the CW.
