"Game of Thrones" star Natalie Dormer recently defended the many violent scenes that have appeared on the show over the past five years and pointed out that those scenes are actually a way of processing complex social politics.
Previously, Slate pointed out that "Game of Thrones" has been criticized by many fans for being too violent and for having too many scenes that glorify sexual violence against women.
Watchers On The Wall reported that Dormer told The Sunday Times that even though some of the scenes on "Game of Thrones" are difficult to watch, it is not good to shelter viewers from such horrors because they also occur in the real world too.
"I find parts of the show difficult to watch, but I don't think we do young people any favors by sheltering them," she explained. "For example, the show's infamous rape scenes can be a potential tool to start a conversation about the statistics of rape and how much it happens within the family."
Dormer added that even though "Game of Thrones" has some disturbing scenes, the violence on the show is actually political commentary and is a good way for viewers to process complex social issues "at the safe distance of fiction."
"The horror of human nature is prevalent in our world, and I appreciate that some people want to turn on the television for escapism, but if that's what you want, then don't watch the show," the actress said. "I choose fantasy to vent, to process complex political, sexual and social politics at the safe distance of fiction. For me, that's what art should be."
Aside from Dormer defending the violence on "Game of Thrones," her co-star Carice Van Houten recently revealed in a new interview that her character Melisandre is an integral part of the upcoming sixth season.
Even though Van Houten denied the rumor that Melisandre will use her magic to resurrect Jon Snow, she hinted to the Wall-Street Journal that her character is going to undergo a transformation and will play a pivotal role in season six.
The "Game of Thrones" season six premiere will air on Sunday, April 24 at 9 p.m. on HBO.
