When it comes to presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton, there's so much more to discuss than what she's wearing (like her Twitter thoughts on the Supreme Court vacancy). That said, when she stopped by the set of Scandal we couldn't not—if a major public figure stops by a national prime-time favorite, headed by a character whose style is often a key tell for the show's mood, all outfits matter.
The politician's pick was classic her: a simply tailored jacket she wore according to the Kate Middleton coatdress school of thought (closed up to the neck, not revealing a peek at what's underneath). It's not a look that Kerry Washington's Olivia Pope does often—she prefers smart blazers worn with silky blouses—and it's not right to say Clinton's look is a business suit. It's chicer and more elegant, plus timeless in a way that suiting isn't always. Yeah, a suit will never be out, but details can quickly date it (hello, shoulder pads). For accessories, she went with a short, chunky gold necklace and complementing earrings.
Does the color matter? A writer in Politico thinks so, suggesting that green's had some important moments in her style arsenal.
"She wore green at her Benghazi hearing and when she went to Iowa right after announcing for president," Matt Latimer wrote. "I mention this because there is little that the Clintons do, at least in the presidential context, that is unplanned. Hillary Clinton’s team is very proud of their efforts to portray their boss as confident, calm, and soothing—like a pastoral green meadow, perhaps?"
The meadow analogy might sound rich, but shades can have a psychological affect on behavior. When we quizzed Pantone's Leatrice Eiseman about what to wear when, she said a rich green is good for commanding power. "Darkening any color always adds empowerment."
FYI, Clinton was in Los Angeles for a fundraising trip, and sources said she will not be featured on any upcoming episodes.
