Vanessa Hudgens brought her A-game to "Grease Live" as Betty Rizzo but privately, the actress and singer was grieving the loss of her father, who died 24-hours prior to the live broadcast.
The show was dedicated to Greg Hudgens, who passed away on Jan. 30 after battling cancer.
"I am so sad to say that last night my daddy, Greg passed away from stage 4 cancer. Thank you to everyone who kept him in your prayers," Hudgens stated on Twitter on Jan. 31, the eve of the broadcast.
"Tonight, I do the show in his honor," ended the heartbreaking tweet.
Hudgens portrayed Rizzo in the Fox live spectacular, starring alongside Julianne Hough as Sandy and Aaron Tveit as Danny.
Supporting Hudgens was Carly Rae Jepsen as Frenchy, Keke Palmer as Marty and Carlos PenaVega as Kenickie.
Now that the long-awaited live broadcast has finally aired, the broadcast's Executive Producer Marc Platt revealed the difficulties of taking on pulling together such a big live undertaking.
"The whole goal here was, more than anything, to deliver great entertainment with great music and great dance and great energy and great characters," said Platt.
"At the same time, we're trying to deliver a live event that feels live and feels in the moment but it still feels like an interesting combination of more cinematic elements and live theater elements," he continued of the elements he used to get the production off the ground.
Opinions were split between those that loved the live broadcast and those that hated it.
'Glee' star Darren Criss tweeted of the production, "Ok sorry for all the RTs it's just there really is so much good stuff to echo about how great #GreaseLive was. A triumph! Bravo to @GoGrease." Hudgens boyfriend Austin Butler tweeted in support of his girlfriend and her spot-on characterization of bad girl Betty Rizzo.
"WOW @VanessaHudgens singing 'Worst Things' had me in tears. Just brilliant," tweeted Butler.
On the other hand, "Grease Live" also had its critics.
Caity Weaver tweeted, "Aaron Tveit is 32 years old. This looks like a musical about substitute teachers."
Brittany Spanos penned, "Recast this musical with a young hologram of John Travolta."
