The Brown Family of TLC's "Sister Wives" may have won a longstanding battle with the state of Utah in having their family recognized as legitimate after a bill was passed to change polygamy from a felony to a misdemeanor.

Radar Online reported that the family's lifestyle is one step closer to being recognized as legal.

The site reported that a bill called HB281 was passed by the House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee in Utah.

This bill has been sent in for a vote, according to the Salt Lake Tribune.

The bill would change bigamy from a felony to a misdemeanor. While it does not legalize polygamy, it will change the "crime."

The family moved to Nevada in 2011 to escape penalty. Prior to the bill, bigamy is a third-degree felony in Utah, which was punishable by up to five years in state prison, according to Fox News.

No criminal charges have been filed against the Browns.

Under the law, a person can be found guilty of bigamy through cohabitation, not just legal marriage contracts.

Kody Brown is legally married to Robyn Brown after divorcing first wife Meri Brown in order to legally adopt Robyn Brown's children from a previous marriage.

This ruling comes on the heels of more drama within the "Sister Wives" family that threatens their relationships with one another.

A recent issue of Life & Style Magazine claims that head of the Brown family will be left with one wife Robyn Brown, as Meri, Janelle, and Christine Brown have plans to leave the extended family, as reported by Celebrity Dirty Laundry.

During the last season of "Sister Wives," Kody Brown's relationships with three of his four wives were put to the test as his unions with Christine, Meri, and Janelle fell into disrepair.

Meri Brown reportedly felt so lonely she began an online love affair and later, found out she was catfished by a woman pretending to be a man.

Christine Brown was so upset by the status of her relationship with Kody Brown that she suggested a couple's retreat. Kody Brown invited their family therapist on a trip intended to bring the couple closer together.

Janelle Brown reiterated many times during season 6 that she felt she was not valued or heard by either Kody Brown or her fellow sister wives.

Season seven of "Sister Wives" will air sometime in early 2016 on TLC.
