"The Muppets" series was not the ratings winner ABC Television would have hoped during season one of the series that starred Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog. Will the series be on the chopping block for season two?
The series started strong for the network but quickly declined after viewers found the show "too adult" for younger viewers. There was also a general dislike of the split between Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog, a fictional television couple for over 30 years.
The series was also taken to task by the watchdog organization Parents Television Council.
The council released research on the first four episodes of the freshman show, which found that the series exposed children to sexual innuendos, drug use or alcohol use every three and a half minutes.
In a press release on their official website, the organization revealed their findings that were revealed to be quite damning for the ABC series.
ABC replaced showrunner Bill Purdy with Kristen Newman after the series winter hiatus in 2015, who vowed to turn the show around and allow the show's key characters to behave more in a manner fans were accustomed to.
Newman opened up regarding her plans to The Hollywood Reporter and revealed that she had big plans in store for the franchise.
"I've been a huge fan of "The Muppets" since I was a kid. I love the music, I love the heart, the zaniness; I love everything "The Muppets" has always been, and I love the idea of getting to bring them into 2016," Newman revealed.
Newman promised to bring back the core of the Muppets, the relationship between Miss Piggy and Kermit, which was lost as the characters turned against each other earlier in the season.
"The heart of the whole franchise has always been Piggy and Kermit, and I think breaking them up was really smart," Newman spilled of the couple to THR.
"There's always more story to be told and more tension when two people who love each other are apart instead of together. But what's important to remember is that they do love each other, and that was being walked away from completely," she revealed.
Heading into season two, "The Muppets" have a clean slate where the show can revamp itself once again.
ABC has not stated whether or not "The Muppets" will be renewed for season two.
