"Arrow" executive producer Marc Guggenheim recently sat down to discuss the shocking death of a major character that occurred at the end of episode 18.
**WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD**
At the end of "Eleven-Fifty Nine," Damien Darhk stabbed Laurel Lance (Black Canary) with one of Oliver Queen's arrows in order to get revenge for her father Quentin Lance betraying H.I.V.E. She was taken to the hospital, but unfortunately did not make it.
Guggenheim told Variety that the decision to kill off Laurel was made after discussing several different storylines and realizing that her death would be the one that would shock viewers the most.
"It's always a show where every character, arguably except for Oliver Queen, is fair game," he explained. "We started off this year with the promise of a death, and when we worked our way through our various different creative choices, we realized that the thing that would give us the most pop, going into this season and next season, unfortunately would be Laurel."
The "Arrow" showrunner also pointed out that despite what some fans on Twitter think, Laurel was not killed off in order to make room for Oliver and Felicity's relationship.
"One of the things we knew people would think was that in a season where Oliver and Felicity got engaged and Laurel died, that's making a statement on who's going to end up with who," Guggenheim said. "Truth be told, we told Oliver and Laurel's romantic story in season one and we never really thought about going back to it. So, the shipping thing was not a factor for us. It just made the most creative sense for us going forward, despite the fact that we love working with Katie."
Even though Laurel is dead, Guggenheim hinted to The Hollywood Reporter that death does not mean goodbye and viewers will still have the opportunity to see Cassidy appear in the "Arrow"-verse.
"Dead is not goodbye," he said. "We definitely recognize across all three shows that when we kill off a character, it means something different now. The concept of death on the show is evolving and changing as we've seen with Sara Lance's death. As the show has evolved, so has death."
Since Cassidy is going to appear in an upcoming episode of "The Flash" as Earth-2 Laurel Lance, who goes by the name of Black Siren, it is possible she will team up with Barry Allen to fight Zoom and live on Earth-1.
Perhaps Earth-2 Laurel will even go to Star City in an upcoming episode of "Arrow" to meet her doppelganger's friends and family.
"Arrow" will return on Wednesday, April 27, at 8 p.m. ET on the CW.
