"Once Upon A Time" showrunners Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz have long teased that they would introduce an LGBT couple this season 5, and in the episode entitled "Ruby Slippers," they finally did through Ruby (Meghan Ory) and Dorothy (Teri Reeves).
When Zelena the Wicked Witch (Rebecca Mader) places Dorothy under a sleeping curse, Ruby travels to the Underworld to save her. The show has proven time and again that true love's kiss really works, and this time, it did when Ruby brought Dorothy back to life with a kiss.
"True love's kiss has been a staple of this show since the beginning," executive producers Kitsis and Horowitz told Entertainment Weekly. "This past Sunday's episode was just another example of how in a fairy tale, as in life, love is love."
When the showrunners announced that they would delve into an LGBT relationship, fans assumed that it would be Mulan (Jamie Chung) who would finally profess her love for Aurora (Sarah Bolger). They also thought that Mulan and Ruby would be the ones to share a relationship, and they even coined the nickname "MulanRouge."
The main characters of "Once Upon A Time" — from Snow White (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Prince Charming (Josh Dallas) to Emma Swan (Jennifer Morrison) and Hook (Colin O'Donoghue) to Regina Mills (Lana Parilla) and Robin Hood (Sean Maguire) — have gone through a lot of challenges together. But the showrunners said that fans should never lose hope that love will always triumph for them in the end.
"This is a show about hope, and I think it's a show that shows you that happy endings have to be earned, they're not easy and neither is hope," Kitsis earlier said. "It's the day to day struggles of how we achieve that."
"Once Upon a Time" airs every Sunday at 8 p.m. on ABC.
