"Outlander" star Sam Heughan recently sat down to discuss what the future holds for his character Jamie Fraser in the upcoming second season of STARZ's hit television show.
Heughan admitted to The Wrap that Jamie is using the plan to change history as a way to avoid talking about the traumatic experience he suffered at the hands of Black Jack Randall in the "Outlander" season one finale.
"Jamie is relieved to be alive and he's excited about being an expectant father," he explained. "Physically he's getting better but mentally he's still suffering the effects of the season one finale. He doesn't talk about it, he bottles it up, but at some point it does come out that he's still being plagued by those events and he needs to deal with it."
The "Outlander" star added that Jamie's inability to discuss his post-traumatic stress disorder also winds up damaging his relationship with his wife Claire in the second season.
"Jamie is used to everything that has happened to him, physically, but he's never dealt with it mentally, before this," Heughan said. "He's not aware of what he should do about it, so he thrusts himself into this world but kind of burning the candle at both ends. So he's trying not to think about it but ultimately it pushes him and Claire further apart. Ultimately, it becomes something the need to deal with."
Heughan also hinted to Philly that "Outlander" season two is going to explore Jamie's flaws.
"Jamie does seem to be Mr. Perfect," he explained. "But he's not, he has so many failings. He's very stubborn, which is probably his biggest failing. However, it's also a good thing. He's so stubbornly in love with Claire, and so stubbornly loyal, but also when they argue, that's when the fireworks happen."
The "Outlander" season two premiere will air on Saturday, April 9, at 9 p.m. ET on STARZ.
