"Outlander" star Caitriona Balfe recently sat down to discuss the upcoming second season and gave a few tidbits about the new enemy her character Claire Fraser is going to meet while living in Paris, France.
Balfe told TVLine that Claire runs afoul of a nobleman named the Comte St. Germain while living in France.
"She's made a pretty ferocious enemy," the actress said. "This character is also a lot darker than we first thought."
Balfe's "Outlander" co-star Sam Heughan added that St. Germain is a deadly adversery who makes life difficult for the Frasers.
"He is a deadly adversary and a very charming one as well," he added. "His political savvy makes him an even more lethal opponent, so look for that thread to play out throughout most of the second season."
Aside from Claire and Jamie's new enemy, Balfe hinted that their characters are also going to struggle to come to terms with being parents.
"There's the excitement, but there's also a lot of trepidation because she doesn't have a strong mother figure in her own life," she explained. "It is an unnerving time for her."
Heughan also warned E!Online that Claire and Jamie's relationship is going to suffer thanks to the strict gender roles in Parisian society.
"They're trying to learn to interact with one another, but also what is required of them in this society," he said. "Claire's required to be a woman of leisure and he's supposed to be out on this mission so they're both playing roles. Unfortunately, they are not suited to their new roles, but they get good at it. They learn to adapt, but it is poisonous and it certainly changes their relationship. So I think this season is more dark in a strange way."
The "Outlander" season two premiere will air on Saturday, April 9, at 9 p.m. ET on STARZ.
