Fans expected "The Walking Dead" season 6 to go out with a bang but they got a whimper instead — and a very significant cliffhanger.

Major spoilers ahead.

There was so much hype surrounding the season 6 finale. Since the second half premiered, fans were waiting patiently for the arrival of a new sinister character named Negan, played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

For weeks leading up to the end, it was teased that a major character will get killed upon Negan's arrival. Fans were disappointed after — at the end of a 90-minute finale episode — Negan swings his bat, Lucille. Blood drips down the camera lens, someone falls to the floor and the screen fades to black leaving fans literally and figuratively in the dark. A majorly hyped moment turned into nothing more than a cliffhanger.

After all the backlash from fans and critics, showrunner Scott Gimple spoke to Variety to defend the show's choices.

When Variety asked why they chose to wait until season 7 for the "big reveal," Gimple basically said that season 7 would be a new story.

"What we saw [Sunday] night was the end of the story of season 6. Where Rick winds up is completely different from where he started in [episode] 1 [the season premiere] and where he started in [episode] 9 [the midseason premiere]." Gimple told Variety. " I know obviously and I've known for awhile what is in [the season 7 premiere]. Presenting what occurs, to show what happened in full force, is the beginning of the next story."

On "Talking Dead," Matthew Negrete, who wrote the finale episode "Last Day on Earth" with Gimple, said something along the same lines. He explained that the finale was to close out Rick's story and season 7 will start with the death because that springboards a brand new story.

The writers may have everything planned out, but the fans were not very happy with the decision. What did Gimple have to say about the backlash?

"I ask people to give us the benefit of the doubt that it's all part of a plan, all part of a story. I truly hope that people see [the season 7 premiere] and they feel it justifies the way we've decided to tell the story. That is the way it is in our minds. I know what [the season 7 premiere] is and I feel that it delivers on what [the season 6 finale] sets up."

Fans, however, believe that there was something a little more sinister behind the curtain. That possibly the cliffhanger was a ratings thing ( that "The Walking Dead" definitely does not need as its standing with the most watched show on television) or that "The Walking Dead" has not decided who they are going to kill off yet.

"I think if you approach it from a place of skepticism or with the idea that there's some sort of negative motivation or cynical motivation behind it — if you come at it that way it's difficult to convince you otherwise," Gimple said. "I do think we've done enough on the show, we've delivered a story that people have enjoyed."

Speaking of who is going to get killed off, does the cast even know? After the season 6 finale Chandler Riggs, who plays Carl, tweeted jokingly about it.

Gimple did not want to give anything away about the death. "I can't let you behind the curtain on that one. The spoilery is just way way way too intense. I would say ... I'm so afraid to open my mouth on this one. There are far too many landmines there to traverse."

Clearly fans will have to wait till the season 7 premiere to find out who was on the other end of Lucille.

What is in store for season 7? Well, a major point of season 6 was to open the world up a little. We met the Hilltop Colony and the Saviors. We also learned, thanks to Jesus, that there are definitely other communities out there. In the season 6 finale, we learned about two more groups — sort of. We hear something about a Library community, and Morgan and Carol receive help from two strangers in what looks like paintball armor. All we know about them is they ride around on horses.

"The world opened up this half season, it opened up to some light places and some dark places," Gimple told Variety. "In the next half season, the world is going to open up even more. We're going to have a wide variety of locales, tone and character. I'm very excited for all the different stories that are going to be told."

Gimple said that the narrative is about to get a lot meatier. There is going to be more variety and more stories to tell. He also said, "Things are going to start off very, very, very dark. But that won't be the whole season. It's not going to be darkness upon darkness upon darkness."

"The Walking Dead" might have held some punches in the season finale but it seems like things are about to get heavy and action-filled in season 7. Will it make up for the "Last Day on Earth" letdown? We will have to wait and see.

"The Walking Dead" season 7 is set to return in October 2016. Meanwhile, "Fear The Walking Dead" season 2 premieres Sunday, April 10, 9 p.m. ET on AMC.
