Will "X-Men: Apocalypse" be the last "X-Men" film produced by Fox?  It appears to be as director Bryan Singer said that making the film has marked "the end of a journey."

"This movie to me is closure," he told Empire. "It's, in a way, a conclusion to a six-film journey... This movie is the story of the true formation of the X-Men. Fundamentally, the story is about how Xavier (James McAvoy) came to form the X-Men as we would know them in X-Men 1, 2 and 3."

However, Singer's statements might also mean that he just wants to take a break from the mutant franchise.

"Abandoning the franchise is not something I think about. But I could not roll into another X-Men movie tomorrow. And I hope not to. I hope to take a break," he told Comic Book Movie.

Singer's next project is "20,000 Leagues Under the Sea" for Fox. Even though the director is keen to take a break from making "X-Men" films, he is already planning who its next villain should be.

It might be difficult to top Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac) as a villain, but Singer believes that Proteus, also known as Kevin MacTaggert (the son of Rose Byrne's Moira), will be a worthy contender.

"There's a lot visually you could do with a character like that," he said.

Meanwhile, McAvoy told The Business Standard that even though his contract as Professor X is finished, he would still like to do more "X-Men" films. He has also heard rumors of co-star Jennifer Lawrence not wanting to reprise her role as Mystique anymore, but he hopes they are untrue.

"I've heard... People have said she's not into it, stuff like that. She's always said to me that she would think about it," Mcavoy said. "I hope she does, because I love working with Jennifer. You know, we've been, like, an extended sort of family, in a weird way, for six or seven years now."

"X-Men: Apocalypse" will hit cinemas on May 27.
