Eyes across the country are on Cleveland, Ohio, where the Republican National Convention kicked off Monday. One of the most hotly-anticipated events: Melania Trump's speech on Monday evening. While pundits analyze the message of the potential new First Lady's speech—not to mention the words she used in her speech—the fashion community began dissecting the meaning behind the elegant white dress she chose to wear for the occasion.
The bracelet-sleeved sheath with balloon cuffs s by Serbian-born, U.K.-based designer Roksanda Ilincic. While the style was completely appropriate, the choice of designer was a surprise, as First Ladies throughout history have sought to promote the American dressmaking industry by wearing U.S.-based designers. Women's Wear Daily reports that Melania purchased the cotton-silk "Margot" dress online from luxury e-commerce site, Net-a-Porter. Within an hour of her speech, the dress had completely sold out.
A spokesperson from the Trump campaign told WWD that Melania "isn’t working with any designers" to develop custom or special looks. Melania's exact dress is no longer available Net-a-Porter, but the same style in black and pink is available on Matches Fashion for $1,288 and at Farfetch, for $1,415.
In recent history, Trump has veered towards European designers, namely graceful looks from Dior. One key trend Melania has been keeping to from some time now? Monochrome. Whether it's all red, nude, baby pink, or cobalt blue, Trump has employed the matchy-matchy on numerous occasions.
