This is horrible: Zendaya uploaded a series of Snapchat videos on September 6 that detailed an interaction she says she had with a Vons store clerk who wasn't a "huge fan of [her] skin tone." According to Zendaya's videos, she and a male friend were attempting to buy gift cards, but the Vons employee refused her service because she thought Zendaya couldn't afford them. It gets worse, though: The clerk apparently tossed Zendaya's wallet back at her in disgust.
"So we just got out of this Vons," Zendaya said on Snapchat. "Now, I am trying to buy a lot of gift cards. There are some certain limits and some things, which is understandable... so I'll take the less amount, whatever. But the lady that was helping us... I don't think she was a huge fan of our skin tone."
The 20-year-old actress continued, "She then threw my wallet. I can't make this up! This is what we deal with! She literally [threw my wallet] and she was like, 'You can't afford this'... It was $400! Long story short, there is so much progress to be done in our world."

Zendaya also says that her cards were loose when the clerk threw her wallet, and one fell on the scanner. However, the Vons worker paid no mind to it and addressed the next customer.
Thankfully, Zendaya was able to purchase her cards after speaking to the Vons manager, but the damage is done.
"You know what, it's all love," Zendaya added at the end of her Snapchat story—like the true high-road queen she is. But that doesn't make this OK. We still live in a world where people of color can't even peacefully go to the grocery store.
As Zendaya said, there is still so much work to do.
